Another day, another split for Post 285 in tourney

For the second straight day, the Galesburg American Legion Post 285 baseball team bounced back after opening with a loss in the Leo Brunner Invitational.

After falling to Washington 11-4 on Saturday morning, Post 285 came back to pick up an8-5 victory over Danville that afternoon.

“Game 2 was a big victory for us,” Galesburg coach Steve Cheesman said. “We showed a lot of character right there.”

Post 285 (22-10) finished second in its pool with a 2-2 record and wraps up the tournament against Kenosha (Wis.) at 11:30 a.m. today at Alleman High School’s south field.

Luke Ryan delivered the big blow against Danville with a three-run double in a five-run fifth inning that gave Galesburg an 8-4 lead.

“He came up big today,” Cheesman said. “That was an enormous clutch hit at a time we really needed it.”

Jesse Hines pitched a scoreless seventh to pick up the save in relief of Nick Milligan, who allowed five runs on nine hits in six innings. Milligan surrendered a pair of home runs, including a three-run shot in the third that put Danville up 4-3.

Post 285 led Washington 2-1 before Washington scored four in the fourth and five in the fifth. Colton Crain allowed four runs on five hits in three-plus innings to take the loss for Galesburg.
