Tim Landis: 3 shopping centers change hands

The corporate ownership of three of Springfield’s oldest shopping centers — FAIRHILLS MALL, SANGAMON CENTER NORTH and a portion of PRAIRIE CROSSING — has moved from Australia to New York.

Centro Properties Group , based in Australia, completed the $9 billion sale of 585 shopping centers to New York-based Blackstone Real Estate Partners after an Australian court ruled the transaction could be completed.

Centro, which has owned the Springfield centers since 2006, announced agreement to sell its U.S. properties to Blackstone in March. A group of shareholders challenged the sale in the Australian courts, but their lawsuit was dismissed last week.

Messages left with Blackstone were not returned, but a company statement said it plans to shift the focus from “preservation to growth” for its newly acquired shopping centers.

According to the company website, Blackstone Real Estate Partners manages $26.5 billion in assets worldwide.

This is the fourth ownership change for the local centers since original developer Lincoln Land Development Co. of Springfield sold the properties to Bradley Real Estate Co. of Chicago in 1997. Bradley sold the centers to Heritage Property Investment Trust of Boston in 2001, which sold out to Centro Properties in 2006.

CRAWFORD MURPHY & TILLY INC. has received a Lincoln Bronze Award from the Lincoln Foundation for Performance Excellence. CMT is the first engineering-consulting firm in Illinois to receive the award, according to a company announcement.

The Lincoln Foundation, based in Naperville, is a not-for-profit group that assesses Illinois organizations on performance in the economy, industry, service, health care, education, not-for-profit activities and government.

Bronze, silver and gold awards are given for three performance levels. Only two gold awards have been named since the Lincoln Foundation began the program in 1994. CMT, founded in Springfield in 1946, has more than 260 employees at offices in Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and Ohio.

Many passengers would agree a new parking lot was high on the list of improvements needed at the AMTRAK station in Springfield. Now, the work is done. The once-rugged lot has been repaved and marked with parking spaces.

A new traffic pattern — one-way, north to south — also has taken effect in an effort to reduce congestion during train arrivals and departures.

The work is part of the first major renovation in more than a decade for the Third Street station. Some trackside landscaping work, including benches, also has been completed.
