Brace yourself for a daytime TV revolution!
The landscape of morning and afternoon television is changing dramatically in San Antonio, with the most stunning alterations happening on ABC affiliate KSAT.
We already saw the biggest disruption: “The Oprah Winfrey Show” departed, taking its far-reaching halo with it. I'll discuss that in a minute. First, more major programming changes: KSAT will wave goodbye to Winfrey's longtime companion show “Dr. Phil” this fall and hello to “Live With Regis and Kelly.”
Yes, after carrying the popular advice show from Phil McGraw for nine years, KSAT surprisingly is ditching it at 3 p.m. On Sept. 12, design guru Nate Berkus will take McGraw's place. However, fans of “Dr. Phil” need not fret. Fox affiliate KABB is happy to carry it. Starting Sept. 5, McGraw's hour will air at 3 p.m. on our Fox station, anchoring a two-hour block of talk that will include “Maury,” starring Maury Povich.
“With the Oprah show no longer on the air, ‘Dr. Phil' has become the most popular syndicated talk show,” John Seabers, KABB general manager, said. “He'll be filling the void for serious relationship-driven topics.”

Now for that other big news blast: “Live! With Regis and Kelly” is returning to S.A. TV.
You made your disapproval known when WOAI dropped the show last fall. Well, starting Sept. 12, “Live” is reborn on KSAT. It will take Berkus' current slot at 9 a.m. and compete with “ Rachael Ray ” on WOAI, “Great Day, SA” on KENS and “Judge Alex” on KABB. Granted, Regis Philbin will be leaving the show, but he promised to stick around until November. As for who'll sit next to Kelly Ripa once he's gone, that hasn't been determined.
‘Oprah' halo disappears
OK? Let's get back to KSAT's loss of what's known as “the Oprah touch,” which, for years, had everything around her turning to ratings gold.
After about a month without her, KSAT's audience numbers for the 4 to 6:30 p.m. block have dropped. The breakdown, according to ratings (May 26-June 28) supplied by KENS:
At 4 p.m., both KSAT and KENS run local news. KENS' “First at Four” debuted first, is anchored by Deborah Knapp and has a trendier feel. The format consists of hard news at the top, followed by weather from Bill Taylor , then longer features and a Facebook component.
