Levar Burton Planning Reading Rainbow Flash Mob
Reading Rainbow is about to unleash the power of the flash mob.
While Reading Rainbow is surely most remembered for its early ’80s heyday, with its unforgettable theme song and thick-spectacled kids offering the obligatory “but don’t take my word for it” catch phrase after praising every book, the show actually ran continuously through mid-2009.
Salon points out that this makes it the third-longest running children’s show in history.
It also means that the show, which began as an ’80s kitsch phenomenon, also made it all the way to the Twitter age, where it’s now experiencing in a major cultural comeback.
Former host Lavar Burton first tweeted last year that he’s aiming for a Reading Rainbow 2.0, and as Salon points out, momentum is now growing for Reading Rainbow Flash Mob, in which ostensibly hundreds of people will spontaneously gather and sing the show’s famous theme song.
Writes Emma Mustich, “[Burton] says he’s ‘actively plotting’ a ‘Reading Rainbow flash mob’ — an event calculated to raise ‘literary awareness’ (and also, no doubt, stir up the show’s old fan base). He’s seeking celebrity help, not to mention more modest volunteers.”
You have to hand it to Burton, it was a brilliant accomplishment to create a compelling, popular TV show that was basically just kids giving book reports—something kids are supposed to hate.
Now Burton is leveraging his unlikely cultural genius for the Twitter generation, bidding his 1.6 million followers “good night” at the end of each day, and raising what promises to be one hell of a spectacle with the hashtag #ReadingRainbowFlashMob .
