Finger Lakes culinary pioneer Debra Whiting killed in state Thruway crash

"Red Newt Cellars Winery and Bistro will be closed Tuesday July 5th in loving memory of Debra Whiting. From 6pm-8pm Tuesday July 5th we will host the memorial service for Debra at Red Newt Cellars, 3675 Tichenor Road, Hector, NY 14841. David Whiting along with Debra's sons Ryan Dougherty and Brenton Whiting, and the family at Red Newt Cellars invite all family and friends to attend and celebrate the life of this most incredible and loving woman. No additional services will be held.

Debra Whiting is an inspiration to us all, and we at Red Newt Cellars intend to honor her legacy by adhering to her commitment to the community, the region, her craft and her family."

The earlier news: Debra Whiting, who helped make the Finger Lakes a culinary destination as chef and co-owner of Red Newt Cellars Winery & Bistro , was killed Thursday in a crash on the New York State Thruway.

Her husband, Red Newt co-owner and winemaker David Whiting, was injured in the crash, which happened about 8:15 p.m. Thursday near mile marker 310 in the Cayuga County town of Montezuma.

State police gave this account:

David Whiting, 47, of Hector, was driving a 1985 Volkswagen in the westbound driving lane when the vehicle moved into the passing lane. The Volkswagen struck a 2004 Buick in the westbound passing lane driven by Ian Bolinski, 18, of Nedrow.

Whiting's vehicle went off the north shoulder of the roadway, overturned and struck a tree. Debra Whiting, 52, also of Hector, was taken by helicopter to Auburn Memorial Hospital. She died of her injuries.

David Whiting was taken to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, where he was treated for lacerations.

The Whitings were returning home from a trip to Vermont.

Bolinski's vehicle ran off the roadway into the median and overturned. His passenger, Frank Pecoraro Jr., 47, of LaFayette, was also taken to Upstate University Hospital with lacerations.

A note on the Red Newt Cellars website said the bistro was closed Friday but was to reopen Saturday. The winery is also open.

The note also says: "The Whiting and Red Newt family extends their deepest gratitude to those who have offered their support and condolences during this tragic time. The tremendous amount of love and strength goes beyond words."

The Whitings opened Red Newt in 1999. Since then, the bistro has won national acclaim for Debra Whiting's creative menu and commitment to local and regional food sources. She was a founder and board president of Finger Lakes Culinary Bounty, a group that supports the region's wine and food identity.

I recently purchased a bunch of corks from an etsy seller and have been waiting to do this fun project.  She promised 100 all natural corks with one ladybug cork in the mix.  I received 99 natural corks and one synthetic cork.  (And yes, I totally counted all of them upon receipt.  I’m just that anal.)  However that synthetic cork combined with the cute ladybug inspired me to do something fun, so I will forgive her trying to slip me a fake.  And by the way, can I just tell you how much I am LOVING my new camera!  I’ve wanted to be able to Sometimes (more like all the time) I have no patience to wait for things to dry.  This is a great tip which I call Lazy Girl’s Glaze.  Spray some black spray paint into a paper cup and then take a small foam brush to paint on your “glaze”.  You have to work fast because it will dry immediately.  Paint on as little or as much as you want to get the effect you’re going for.
