Time to stop propping up Egypt's currency

Since January’s ousting of Hosni Mubarak as president, Egypt’s economy has come under enormous strain. Tourism has plummeted, foreign capital has fled and domestic investment has all-but stalled. The International Monetary Fund’s $3bn budget support plan , announced on Monday, came not a moment too soon.

Even so, Egypt’s problems continue to mount. Unemployment is rising: some estimates suggest about 800,000 people have become unemployed in the past three months, while the country’s workforce amounts to only a third of its population.

what currency to take to egypt

We are off to egypt (dahab) in a week or so and were wondering what currency we should take. there are a lot of posts on travel websites that state euro, dollar, le. We dont mind what we take, we kind of liked the idea of GBP and changing up in egyptian pounds when we get there but is it actually practical. Also what do we need to pay for visa at the airport, if we do need a visa at all?????? We are off to egypt (dahab) in a week or so and were wondering what currency we should take. there are a lot of posts on travel websites that state euro, dollar, le. We dont mind what we take, we kind of liked the idea of GBP and changing up in egyptian pounds when we get there but is it actually practical. Also what do we need to pay for visa at the airport, if we do need a visa at all?????? If the place you're diving with quotes their prices in Euro, you may save a lot by paying them in Euro rather than by card (where they'll do 1 conversion to Egyptian pounds - often not at an ideal rate - then charge your card in EGP so you pay for a 2nd conversion). That said, last time I was at Emperor their rates were entirely fair (I looked them up) with any differences being a few pence, so it depends who you are with. Since for most people the diving and hotel bills will be the main ones, they are the only ones where I've bothered worrying. I think the visa is $15 but they'll give you change for any currency at a reasonable rate. Go to a cashpoint and get EGP out when you get there, just make sure you have enough for paying for the visa and possibly some tips before you go. They will take GB coins, but you'll also find lots of people looking to get them changed to GB notes which are actually useful for them. You only need the visa if you are going to Ras Mohammed or out of the Sinai - so if all you diving is Dahab based shore stuff you dont need it (write "Sinai Only on the back of you immigration card), if you think you may sign up for a Ras Mo trip or Thistlegorm then get one anyway as once you are in Dahab you cant get em and basically stuffed if you want to travel.
