Living history -- and a way to tie in with what your kids learned this year -- come together at Captain's Cove in Bridgeport where replicas of Columbus's ships the Nina and Pinta sail in on July 1. The completely built by hand Nina and the Brazil crafted Pinta were singled out by Archaeology magazine for their authenticity. Go on board from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tickets are $6-$8. A hovercraft is a vehicle that can move across surfaces as it is supported by high-pressure, slow-moving air that ejected along the bottom surface and is contained inside a skirt. Even though it is supported by this air it is not classified as a typed of aircraft. These are unique vehicles in that they can travel over the water, ice and land equally efficiently. Now let’s look at some early history…
In 1716, Emanuel Swedenborg, a Swedish scientist, first mentioned the principles behind the hovering and the hovercrafts. It was not until 1915 though, that Dagobert Muller from Austria constructed the first of the air-cushioned vehicles. It looked similar to part of a large wing of an aircraft and four aero engines propelled it forward, along with a fifth one which blew the air underneath the vehicle’s front making the air pressure increase beneath it. This made the Versuchsgleitboot halfway between the ram-air craft of the Soviet models that came later and the modern-day hovercraft, which has air forced to inside a skirt. This Versuchsgleitboot was designed to be used as a torpedo boat and it could reach the high speed of more than 32 knots or 59 kmh. Even though it had been armed and fully tested, it never participated in combat and was finally scrapped.
In 1931, Toivo J. Kaario, an aero engineer from Finland, designed the first of the true hovercrafts. This model included in the design a lift engine which blew air inside a flexible envelop to create lift. It was not until 1937 though that the prototype was finished, Pintaliitäjä, which means Surface Soarer. Kaario never could get the money to build the design though.
The modern-day hovercraft though, is accredited mainly to Sir Christopher Cockerell. He proved his theory using a cat food placed concentrically inside a coffee can. High-pressure air got blown in the area between the two cans, for the purpose of studying it to come up with his design. He discovered that while this created a ring of air as he thought it would, the fast sheet of moving air also created a type of barrier for the air on each side. He named this effect the “momentum curtain”. This could be utilized to capture the high-pressure air inside the curtain area, and creating lift with pressure not the airflow. This meant that less power could be used in operating a hovercraft.
Cockerell constructed some models of the hovercraft from his design he came up with in the early part of the 1950s. These featured the engine mounted in such a way as to blow air from the front part of the hovercraft down to the cavity underneath, creating both propulsion and lift.
