The Addicks are one of the favourites to win promotion to the Championship this season as the supporters will be hoping for a new era under the guidance of club legend Chris Powell.
It has been a dramatic slide in recent years for the Londoners, four years ago they were playing against the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea in the Premier League. Charlton's relegation from the top flight was confirmed in 2007, one year after the departure of long serving manager Alan Curbishley.
Charlton's stay in the Championship was short but certainly not sweet, as they suffered their second relegation inside three years, dropping down to League One for the first time in 29 years in 2009.
It was a case of starting from scratch for the Addicks as they prepared for life in the third tier of English football. However their season couldn't have started any better, setting a new club record for the best-ever start to a season storming to six consecutive wins.
However Charlton lost teenage sensation Johnjo Shelvey to Liverpool the following April, but it didn't stop the club from reaching the League One Play-Offs. The Addicks lost out in the semi-finals to Swindon Town in a heart breaking penalty shootout at the Valley.
Last season wasn't as successful as their first in League One for the former Premier League side as they couldn't repeat the form that led them into the top six, finishing 11th. Off the pitch it was an important time for the club, as the Addicks were taken over by a group represented by former chief executive Peter Varney on New Years Eve.

Preston will visit the Valley on the 5th November, Guy Fawkes night, in an eagerly anticipated game in the Capital. The return fixture at Deepdale will be the final home game of the season for PNE on Saturday 28th April.
