'Risk' grounds Tiger
TASMANIAN air passengers have again had their travel plans disrupted after Tiger Airways planes were grounded across the nation for a week.
The Civil Aviation Safety Authority late on Friday suspended the operations of the airline because it believes permitting it to continue to fly poses a serious and imminent risk to air safety.
Yesterday's daily return flight from Melbourne to Hobart was cancelled.
There will be no Tiger flights into or out of the state until at least next Saturday.
It is expected the grounding will affect about 1200 customers wishing to fly to or from Hobart.
The grounding follows a 10-day disruption in mid-June when many flights to and from Hobart were grounded by Jetstar and Tiger Airways because of safety concerns over ash clouds from Chile's Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcano.
Tiger Airways customers were frantically trying to buy alternative flights out of Hobart yesterday morning.
Jetstar staff told the Sunday Tasmanian that about a dozen Tiger customers had snapped up tickets on their 1pm flight out of Hobart after they arrived at the airport to discover Tiger's 9.45am flight was cancelled.
Virgin Blue and Jetstar have offered discount fares for passengers left stranded after Tiger's latest incident.
Disgruntled customers said yesterday Tiger staff at the Hobart International Airport were wonderful but the company had let them down.
Melbourne student Elise Wenban said she had not been notified about her cancelled flight and had to use her mum's credit card to get home.
It was the second time in less than a week Ms Wenban's Tiger flight had been cancelled.
After her first $40 Tiger Airways flight was cancelled from Melbourne earlier in the week she flew with Jetstar at a cost of $130.
Yesterday it was the same scenario - only this time it cost her an additional $90 to get home.
Ms Wenban said she had been told by Tiger's staff that her money would be refunded in about six weeks.
Virgin Australia offered some relief for travellers in and out of Hobart yesterday.
The company has offered extra capacity and special fares to assist disrupted Tiger Airways passengers for travel up to July 8.
Virgin said the fares were subject to availability and might not be available on every flight.
Special fares in and out of Hobart will be offered at $100.
Jetstar also offered special $100 fares to Tiger Airways customers.
