Newcomers embrace Canadian traditions
Yongbum Park, from South Korea
Friends, barbecue and beer - those are the three distinctly Canadian ingredients that South Korea native Yongbum Park plans to combine to celebrate Canada Day this year.
He moved to Canada with his wife and two children two years ago. Where South Korea has a very rigid school system that can require children to study from 7 a.m. through midnight, Yongbum says that simply isn't the life he wanted for his children.
"My children can have more free time (in Canada)," he says. "My son can play with his friends a lot more."
Yongbum believes social time is important along with studying.
His daughter has a disability, and while Yongbum says the medical system is stronger in South Korea, the social supports are not, and he wants his children to have every chance given to them.
When Parks Canada held a weekend camping event for new Canadians last year, the Park family jumped at the chance. They camped at Fort Beausejour, and while a great time was had initially, rain dampened the affair.
The Parks' tent was leaking, their sleeping bags were wet and Yongbum's wife wanted to go home. But they haven't given up.
"We'll try again this summer," he says.
Despite the poor experience camping, Yongbum smiles and, in a way that can only be said by someone who isn't from here, offers, "I think the weather in New Brunswick is very exciting.
