O'BRIEN AND OUR NEIGHBORS
Live Oak — As I write this, I'm already feeling sad as the last of my family packs up to head to Jacksonville for their flights back home to Massachusetts. It's been years since I've had so many teens and young people in my home, and it's been an absolute joy. My nieces (their moms) have been the best of house guests (sure did enjoy the excellent "maid" services) and caught me up with all that their children are involved in, as well as their extended families. One of my great-nieces is a budding ballerina, one of a group of young girls invited to dance at Radio City Music Hall this spring in a ballet. Another great-niece is a promising short-story writer, has a lovely way of expressing herself on paper. One great nephew is a whiz at computer games and computer technology, another part of a junior-high "traveling" soccer team that has done very well the last couple of years, still another extremely interested in the culinary arts (a month ago met his idol from one of the TV cooking shows and was given an autographed chef's apron) and made a great decorated cake for us......and he's only 9 years old! The rest are making life-decisions as they go through their educations, expressing quietly a love of the Lord, showing that love not in words but in actions, as well as preparing themselves for their future. How refreshing it has been to see them living that belief, not just paying lip service. God bless each one of them. From the first gathering last Saturday at my son's house, eating in the big carport, all the teens and six parents outside playing volleyball in the pouring rain, to tubing down the Ichetucknee and more grilling and fun, finally taking a tour at the "Alpaca Ambassadors" compound in O'Brien, it has been an absolutely wonderful week of reconnecting with my nieces and nephews, and the first time in more than 6 years being in the same place at the same time with my two brothers. I've got a treasure trove of memories to add to my collection, and too many photos to count. And the best part was spending time with great-nephews and great-nieces who were just small kids last time we were together, the youngest not even born yet, and watching how they have grown. They are each a credit to their parents, loving and talented young people with wonderful futures in store for each of them.
