A NORTH business boss accused of murder on a Spanish holiday island at last faces trial this week.
Coach company boss Stephen Johnson says he has been “trapped in paradise” for the last three and a half years while he has been awaiting trial for murder in Tenerife.
The 56-year-old was arrested and charged with a fatal stabbing in a street brawl outside a pub in Tenerife in 2008.
The father-of-two has been on remand in the Canary Islands ever since because the authorities confiscated his passport.
Stephen is charged with the murder of a 25-year-old Moroccan who died following a street fight in Playa de las Americas on January 12, 2008.
The trial is set to start tomorrow and last four days.
Stephen, of Hetton-le-Hole, near Sunderland, told the Sunday Sun he just wants the nightmare to be over.
He said: “I’m relieved the trial is finally happening because earlier this year they postponed it until November.
“At the same time I’m very nervous because I just don’t know what’s going to happen.
“I will be trialled by a brand new jury system and I’m going into it blindfold.
“Three and a half years has just been far too long to wait. It’s taken its toll on my health and I’ve been separated from my family. I’ve missed my granddaughter growing up.”
The coach company owner has always maintained he was just acting as a good Samaritan trying to break up a fight, and Spanish police wrongly identified him as the killer. As part of the conditions of his bail Stephen has been bound to stay in Tenerife until his case came to trial.
It means he has been forced to live in his holiday apartment alone thousands of miles from his family.
Stephen’s wife Joan, 54, flew out to Tenerife on Friday, to be with her husband throughout the trial.
Joan, who has been running the family business with children Gary, 25, Michelle, 27, and Lorraine, 28, said: “We’re just praying that the trial does go ahead as the Spanish are notorious for cancelling and postponing court dates.
“I’m nervous about it but also feeling very positive.
“It’s just got to be sorted. We need to get our lives back on track.
“We’ve been living this nightmare for three and a half years.
