Wal-Mart spend $2.4 million on lobbying in Q1

The chain also lobbied on trade bills involving Panama/Colombia Free Trade Agreement, as well as legislation on immigration reform and supply chain security issues. Wal-Mart also focused on legislation involving privacy related to e-commerce, waste reform and consumer product safety, according to the amended form it filed April 27 with the House clerk's office.

Wal-Mart lobbied Congress, Securities and Exchange Commission, U.S. Department of Commerce, U.S. Agency for International Development Office, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Department of Labor, the Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Treasury, according to the filing.

The largest retailer in the United States is making an aggressive push into urban areas such as Chicago, Philadelphia, New York while the United Food and Commercial Workers union plays an underdog role in garnering public attention of Walmart’s abuse of workers from garment factories to employees in their Supercenters.

UFCW is trying to highlight these abuses in a Worker Truth Tour featuring people who have or currently work for the massive corporation or a subsidiary. The tour reached Chicago earlier this week featuring two women from Bangladesh who work in garment factories. The youngest of the two, Aleya Akter, continues to work 208 hours a month for a mere $80. It comes out to 38.5 cents an hour. She started working in the factories at the age of nine in 1994.

She claimed there are lots of violations, long hours, and forced overtime. Additionally, she said through a translator, “Enough is enough. We need to change the working conditions in the factories.”

Almost as an afterthought Aleya alleged that the workplace in these garment factories are unsafe and some of the women are physically abused by managers.

Robert Hines Jr., a former distribution center employee, was hired through a temporary employment agency. After four months of work Hines concluded he and others were being cheated out of their pay. Prior to the realization they were forced to cut lunch time short with the constant threat, “We can find eight more guys just like you.”

He estimates he is still owed more than $1,500 in pay. Hines and five of his fellow employees hired a lawyer to take up their case.

For 11 years Cynthia Murray has worked at her local Walmart as a fitting room associate. Unafraid of repercussions she has spoken out with UFCW about the poverty level wages and gender discrimination. The United States Supreme Court began hearing arguments in the largest class-action lawsuit with over 1 million women claiming gender discrimination against Walmart and managers.

Diverging back onto wages Murray demanded, “They must hire people at living wages.” She also warned of Walmart’s claim of quality jobs entering urban areas.

After her father became ill and could no longer provide for the family, 12 year old Kalpona Akter found a job in one of the garment factories of Bangladesh working 14 hours a day for just six dollars a month.

Nearly 16 years later Kalpona is organizing garment workers and advocating for human and labor rights. Because of her subversive efforts she has been blacklisted from working in another factory located in her home country. When this did not stop her efforts to help other women and children a subcontractor for Walmart filed a false criminal complaint against her.
