Student shares semester-long experience in Europe
Traveling to Europe for the first time was an experience in itself, let alone being an international exchange student. Not only was I on another continent, but I was about to engage in a semester of school with individuals from around the world.
When this exchange opportunity was presented at my school, the University of South Carolina-Aiken, I jumped on board and applied. Before I knew it, I was one of three students from my school accepted to attend Ieseg School of Management in Lille, France, for the spring 2011 semester.
Forty-six countries were represented among the students and teachers at Ieseg. Everyone — including non-exchange students — at the school spoke English, so there was never a communication barrier. This was indeed a bonus and made it easy for me to establish friendships. My closest friends while on exchange were from Canada, Mexico, India, South Korea, China and Russia. It took me a while to get used to identifying myself as “Tiffany from the U.S.” instead of “Tiffany from South Carolina” or “Tiffany from Orangeburg.”
There was much more I had to adjust to, as well, like the “cheek kiss” (one kiss on the left cheek and one on the right), referring to restrooms as the “toilette” and looking for the “WC” (“water closet”). I also had to adjust to the use of the metric system — hearing temperatures in Celsius rather than Fahrenheit — and staying in youth hostels when I traveled.
But my biggest adjustment was the six-hour time difference: My noon was my parents and friends 6 a.m. The only times that I had real-time conversations with my friends back home was on the nights that I stayed up late or on the weekends when I was not out traveling. We mainly used Facebook.
On the flip side, there were some adjustments that I actually enjoyed, like having fresh-baked bread every morning and eating foods prepared, for the most part, without preservatives. I was also able to take advantage of non-stop sales in all of the retail stores for two whole months. These two-month government-regulated sales take place twice a year, once in mid-January and again in late June. Since I knew that I was not going to be there for the end-of-June sale, I made sure I got my money’s worth during the first sale.
While I was busy adjusting to my new lifestyle, many of the other exchange students wanted to know more about the United States. I told them that you can’t put the U.S. in a box, and explained the diversity in culture, upbringing and lifestyles that exist in the States. When many of them thought of the U.S., places like New York and California came to mind, and they wanted to compare what they saw in movies or read in books to what was reality. I could not blame them, because just like they had questions about my country, I had questions about theirs. Conversations like this would be brought up during our social dinners, where we each cooked a dish from our country. When we weren’t talking about our countries, we discussed possible places to visit, where we were traveling next, and suggestions on lodging, modes of transportation and the “must see” attractions. Some of my trips were in groups and others were solo.

During the winter break, many people around Europe ski. Instead of skiing, some friends and I took a week-long vacation to Italy, traveling to Como, Bergamo, Milan, Verona and Venice, where we attended a mask carnival. I thoroughly enjoyed my breaks.
