Someone broke into a vacant Lake California home and made off with about $800 of home appliances.

A Realtor reported the burglary at the Oak Run Place home and estimated it occurred between May 17 and May 23, Tehama County Sheriff's deputies said.

The thieves took a microwave oven and a dishwasher, deputies said. The burglars also damaged the frame around the garage side door they used to enter the home.

The federal Department of Housing and Urban Development owns the home, and real estate agents had been showing it.

Woman dies in ATV wreck near Hayfork

An Arcata woman was killed late Sunday evening in an ATV wreck near on U.S. Forest Service land west of Hayfork.

Justine Thonson, 28, was riding a Suzuki Quadrunner on U.S. Forest Route 2N34 around 10 p.m. at unknown speed in dirt and gravel, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

Thonson let the ATV drift to the right. The rig left the road and went down a 35-foot slope before hitting a large tree, the CHP said.

Thonson's boyfriend found her and tried to revive her using CPR, according to the CHP. The boyfriend and some neighbors took Thonson on an ATV some 10 miles to a waiting ambulance, where a paramedic pronounced her dead.

CHP officers are still investigating the wreck and have not ruled out alcohol.

Single-car crash kills Etna man

The California Highway Patrol is investigating a solo wreck that killed an Etna man early Saturday south of Fort Jones.

CHP officers found Gregory Clayton Smith, 22, lying in a field about 50 feet from a 1998 Toyota Tacoma pickup that had sustained total rollover damage.

CHP officers determined Smith had been driving on Eastside Road about a half mile east of Island Road at an unknown speed.

Smith drove across the westbound lane of Eastside Road and onto the shoulder. He turned the truck right in an effort to regain control, drove across both lanes of Eastside Road onto the south shoulder and rolled.

The wreck threw Smith out of the truck and into the field, where he suffered fatal injuries, officers said. He was not wearing a seat belt.

Supervisors to consider new maps

Shasta County's proposed redistricting map will go to the board of supervisors today for the first round of input before two public hearings are held this summer.

The county has to redraw its supervisorial boundaries every 10 years after U.S. Census Bureau population counts are done so that each supervisor represents an equal segment of the population.
