Fort Jackson museum reopens after two years

FORT JACKSON (WACH) After two years, the Fort Jackson Museum is reopening its doors July 1, as the newly renovated U.S. Army Basic Combat Training Museum. 

The Grand Opening event is held from noon to 4 p.m. It features interactive displays for visitors to experience some of the training exercises that soldiers practice.

There are displays of military gear, uniforms, and vehicles used by the U.S. Army for the past 90 years, and museum staff will be available to answer questions throughout the day.  This event is free and open to the public.

The Basic Combat Training Museum was originally known as the Fort Jackson Museum when it opened its doors in 1974. It had a collection of 20 artifacts and was located in the old Post Exchange building on Jackson Blvd, across the street from Post Headquarters.  From 1974 to 1985, the Fort Jackson Museum served as a historical warehouse of sorts, and it collected and displayed all types of weapons, uniforms, and militaria.

The museum is located at Fort Jackson in Columbia, SC.  The visitor entrance for the base is on Forest Dr, at exit 12 on I-77.  To get onto the base, visitors must present a photo ID, proof of automobile insurance, and proof of car registration.  Motorcycle riders must also conform to Department of Defense regulations to enter post and requirements include: wear of a DOT approved helmet, full-fingered gloves, over the ankle boots, long-sleeved shirt/jacket and reflective vest or clothing.

Once inside the base, visitors continue straight on Strom Thurmond Blvd. At the second stoplight, turn right onto Jackson Blvd.  The museum is located on the left, across the street from Post Headquarters.
