UNESCO adds León Cathedral to World Heritage List | PRLog
PRLog (Press Release) – Jun 28, 2011 – The World Heritage Committee of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in its 35th session in Paris, France, recently voted to add the Cathedral of León, in Nicaragua, to the World Heritage List.
Built between 1747 and the early 19th century to the design of Guatemalan architect Diego José de Porres Esquivel, the León Cathedral expresses the transition from Baroque to Neoclassical architecture and its style can be considered to be eclectic. The Cathedral is characterized by the sobriety of its interior decoration and the abundance of natural light. The vault of the Sanctuary, however, presents rich ornamentation. The Cathedral houses important works of art including a wooden Flemish altarpiece, and paintings of the 14 stations of the Cross by Nicaraguan artist Antonio Sarria (late 19th and early 20th centuries).
The León Cathedral is Nicaragua’s second site to be added to the World Heritage List, the first site added was the Ruins of León Viejo in 2000. León Viejo is one of the oldest Spanish colonial settlements in the Americas. It did not develop and so its ruins are an outstanding testimony to the social and economic structures of the Spanish Empire in the 16th century. Moreover, the site has immense archaeological potential.
The León Cathedral in Nicaragua and the Coffee Cultural Landscape of Colombia were the only two sites in Latin America to be added to the list during the 35th session of the World Heritage Committee, out of a total of 25 new inscriptions. The World Heritage List now numbers 936 properties, of which 183 are natural sites, 725 are cultural and 28 are mixed.
The World 1081644813 Heritage Committee seeks to encourage the identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding value to humanity. This is embodied in an international treaty called the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, adopted by UNESCO in 1972. PRONicaragua is the Nicaraguan Investment Promotion Agency, established in 2002. It is a non-profit, public-private institution whose mission is to generate economic growth and job creation in Nicaragua by attracting high-quality foreign direct investment.
