NH fireworks companies eye boom over the border in Maine

Jaffrey-based Atlas Fireworks Factory plans to open three to five stores in Maine in response to the governor signing a bill Friday making fireworks legal there starting in January.

“We plan on having at least three up and running by the next Fourth of July,” Matthew Shea, vice president of Atlas PyroVision Productions, said Friday. “If anything, we’re probably positioned well to do well in Maine due to the fact it wouldn’t affect our other stores or affect them less (than competitors).”

Atlas’ closest competitor in terms of New Hampshire stores, Phantom Fireworks, also plans to set up shop in Maine.

“I think it’s going to obviously take some border business away from Seabrook,” said Bill Weimer, vice president of Phantom Fireworks, which operates a store in Seabrook.

“Certainly, there would be some amount of cross-border business that would be lost to Maine,” he said in a phone interview from the company’s headquarters in Youngstown, Ohio.

Both companies said it was too early to say where they would locate stores, since communities will have veto power over fireworks.

And if a Bay State legislator’s bill gains approval, Massachusetts would join New Hampshire and Maine.

“Truthfully, in our case, I think a Massachusetts law would have a much greater impact on our southern New Hampshire business than the Maine law has on our eastern New Hampshire business,” Weimer said.

If there are losers in any border war, New Hampshire’s 28 fireworks stores might not be the only ones: Having fewer fireworks shoppers would also mean fewer consumers buying gas or eating in the Granite State.

On Thursday, Jim Westell invested $1,000 and four hours of driving to the Atlas store in Londonderry to stock his annual July 4th party in Rhode Island with fireworks. But his yearly pilgrimages would end if Massachusetts legalized fireworks.

“It’s definitely going to cut my ride,” said Westell, who plans to host at least 50 people on his 5.5 acres Monday.

After his fireworks purchases less than two miles off Interstate 93, Westell said he hadn’t finished with his shopping Thursday afternoon.

“I’ll stop at the liquor store,” he said. “Alcohol and explosives: It’s the perfect combination. ‘Live Free or Die,’ right?
