The Daily Flog: June 21, 2011

So we went one-for-four this weekend…not exactly where we wanted to be with the opportunity we had. First the good news…Javontae Starks picked up a win and got tv time on ESPN. Was it a “wow’ performance? Anything but, however a win is a win and the tv piece ads another dynamic.

The let down of the weekend came Saturday night when Jason Litzau was dropped in the first round of his match against Adrien Broner. Litzau got caught with a Broner right and then dodged a flurry of punches before the referee stepped in and stopped the fight at 2:58 of the first. Where does he go from here is the big question. We’ll try to catch up with Jason later this week.

Antwan Robertson and Patrick Cape both lost in Canada on Saturday night as well. Robertson an 8 round unanimous decision to Steve Cannell while Cape was stopped in the second round against Sean Eklund.

Bad to Worse: The situation surrounding Seconds Out Promotions and Tony Grygelko has gone from bad to worse. Grygelko has been suspended indefinitely by the Minnesota Combative Sports Council for not paying a fighter’s purse and expenses.

There is much more to the story to quote the late, great Paul Harvey, none of which is good for the fight game in the state of Minnesota.

I consider Tony a good friend having worked with him through the years and don’t want to throw anyone under the bus here, but several questions need to be answered and only he has the answers.

Brian Garaghty, the MMA fighter who filed the formal complaint against Seconds Out and Vivid MMA is not the only fighter that has not received payment.

There is alleged fraud against Tony’s former accountant, but no formal charges have been brought against him although I have been told things are in the works from the legal side. If this alleged fraud has taken place over the course of years, I am sure it would take some time to retrace steps and where the money trail leads, but why no formal charges have been brought is beyond me…although I will admit, I am NOT a great legal mind.

As to knowledge about others who have not been reimbursed for services, I can say with 100% certainty there are fighters from the May 27th Armory card that are waiting on payment. Assume it will only be a matter of time before others come forward. Maybe they have and the commission has yet to release any additional reports.

In short, it gives the sport a black eye where it isn’t needed. The L.P version is more complicated as it virtually ends the run for the promotional company that brought boxing back to the state of Minnesota.

I do have a strong affection for the radio industry though, and knowing that there are many times when words appear at IR which sway the interpretation of a story gives me a desire to print - as Paul Harvey said - "the rest of the story.
