In Texas, faces of newly minted US citizens
The United States established a new federal agency, the Naturalization Service, in 1906. That year, a total of 7,941 foreign nationals took the oath to become Americans.
Nearly 620,000 people recited that 140-word declaration in 2010, down from a high of more than 1.4 million in 1997, but a staggering number nonetheless. Newly naturalized citizens hail from Lesotho (a landlocked kingdom, surrounded by the Republic of South Africa, where seven new Americans came from in 2010) and Mexico (67,062); from Iceland (51) and India (61,142); from Afghanistan (2,230), at the top of the alphabetical chart, and Zimbabwe (546), at the bottom of the 197-nation list.
These newcomers were guided here by a countless variety of personal motives, yet they pledge their allegiance for the same core reasons. They also share a central uniformity in the process by which they became Americans.
Every new citizen passes the same examinations, attends the same kind of ceremony (naturalizations are conducted everywhere, and Texas ranks fourth among the 50 states and two territories in the number of prenaturalized nationals claiming residence), swears to the court (U.S. district), listens to the same proclamations, holds the same familiar flag, recites the same Oath of Allegiance and receives the same certificate entitling them to the rights and responsibilities as Americans.
The citizenship ceremony is scripted and formal. It lasts about 90 minutes. The last word the new Americans hear is "Congratulations.
