Canadian Diabetes Association provides free testing kits

The Canadian Diabetes Association will be giving out 4,901 free kits of diabetes testing supplies for diabetes patients across the country with "really high" financial need.

"What we know is that diabetes can be very costly for people," said Jake Reid, regional director for the Maritimes division of the Canadian Diabetes Association. "If they want to take care of themselves and they want to self-manage, it can be costly."

He encouraged anyone struggling to pay for tests to apply.

The kits have been donated to the association by Johnson & Johnson through what's being called the Compassionate Use Program. Each kit will contain one OneTouch UltraMini System, 300 OneTouch Ultra Blue Test Strips and 300 OneTouch Delica Lancets.

Diabetes rates continue to grow across the country - especially in New Brunswick. According to a report released by the province back in November 2010, nearly 67,000 diabetes cases were expected in the province in the fiscal year of 2010-11.

And according to Reid, many of those people continue to struggle to pay for their diabetes medication. Reid says the cost of diabetes medications can vary from $1,000 per year to $15,000 per year, but the average New Brunswicker with diabetes pays about $3,600 a year, around $300 a month.

Reid says the newly offered diabetes testing kits, worth about $300, could provide a few years of supplies for people with Type 2 diabetes and only about a month's worth for people with Type 1 diabetes, who have to monitor their blood-glucose level much closer and therefore require more testing supplies.

But Reid says the CDA is happy to be able to provide something instead of nothing at all. Every little bit helps, he said.

"We've finally sort of hit this critical mass of issues where everyone has said we cannot ignore this any longer," Reid said. "(Diabetes) is a hidden disease sometimes. People acquire it, (but) they don't necessarily want to talk about it."

Patients can apply for the diabetes kits by filling out a form online. According to Reid, first priority will go to patients who have little to no health coverage for their diabetes medication. Second priority will go to diabetes patients in the high-risk categories which include - among others - people who are aboriginal, African or Hispanic. Applicants will be chosen based on current coverage for their diabetes medications, their monthly out-of-pocket expenses for their diabetes medication and their gross yearly household income.

Individuals that engage in this type of reckless behavior feel as though they cannot get through the day without drinking and need alcoholic substances to concentrate on tasks at work or to avoid depression. Systematic alcoholics are almost always experiencing multiple stresses and other family or personal problems that cause them to drink. They usually become defensive or angry if someone tries to confront them about the problem. This reaction is to be expected but help is definitely needed. Medical attention is best for the systematic alcoholic. Getting the advice to stop drinking from a professional may help the individual take the problem more seriously.
