When it comes to beauty products, fewer ingredients are better for Marnie Scott.

For years, the 33-year-old Sioux Falls massage therapist has been making her own body balm, shampoo and conditioner.
"I really have a hard time using things now knowing what's in it," she says. "When I put perfume on, I think, 'What exactly am I spraying on myself?' "
Lip balm, however, was one product she always had to buy. But even so, she hated reading the list of unpronounceable (and sometimes indefinable) ingredients.
So one day Scott thought, "I could make make my own just as easy - and I could make it better."
Initially, Scott just wanted to make lip balm to give as little gifts for her friends and massage therapy clients. But her home-based beauty operation soon became a burgeoning business she calls Simply. Natural. And it's a way for Scott to evangelize the importance of using all-natural products.
Making lip balm isn't all that complicated, Scott says. It's simply a matter of melting all the ingredients together in a double boiler on top of her kitchen stove.
But finding the right combination of ingredients and essential oils to produce the right texture and scents took a lot of trial and error.
