Knights take young Finn over big Russian

Patrick Roy’s Quebec Remparts are essentially the London Knights with a French-language flair.

They have big bucks, draw large crowds to the Colisee and are, more often than not, one of major-junior hockey’s top contenders.

But in Wednesday’s Canadian Hockey League import draft, the Knights traded up for the first overall pick and took Finnish defenceman Olli Maatta, a highly regarded rearguard who many feel will end up a first-round NHL selection next summer.

Roy, picking second for his Remparts, grabbed big Russian centre Mikhail Grigorenko — the frontrunner to be the No. 1 overall choice in the 2012 draft.

The Hunters parted with Pittsburgh Penguins prospect Reid McNeill, the 25th pick in the import draft and second- and third-round picks in 2013.

Roy surrendered only the 11th overall import pick, a third-round pick in 2013 and a second rounder in 2014 to get Grigorenko.

“We wanted the D,” Dale Hunter said. “We needed another D-man after trading away Reid and we got a good one who’s younger. I saw (Maatta) play two games (at the world under-18s in Germany this spring).

“He’s a ’94 (born) and that’s a ’93 tournament, so he was playing a year younger and he was still one of their go-to guys. He played in all situations for them. He hooks the net well.”

There’s little question the 16-year-old Maatta should be an immediate impact player. He’s 6-foot-2, 198 pounds and is the youngest Finn to play for his country’s world-junior team last year in Buffalo.

But this situation highlights the junior import draft is more about matchmaking than anything else. GM Mark Hunter said the Knights didn’t negotiate with Grigorenko’s people. He indicated Maatta was the guy they wanted.

“We heard Maatta was coming over here,” Mark Hunter said. “Nothing’s ever 100% and we still have to talk to the young man. We’re going to call him here shortly, but we had a pretty good idea (he would report).”

If there’s any concern a player won’t move from his home club, then it’s not worth the risk to make the pick. Three years ago, the Sudbury Wolves took Russian Nikita Filatov first overall and he never played a game for them.

Clearly, the Hunters felt they could get Maatta, but weren’t as sure about the Russian. Roy, however, was more confident he could get Grigorenko.
