Kurogo Mobile Framework Gains Widespread Adoption with Mobile Developers
Leading universities around the world, including Boston College, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Central Florida, are using Kurogo to easily create rich mobile websites. Available as a free download and announced in April, Kurogo is an open source project based on the highly regarded MIT Mobile Framework.“Because Kurogo was developed by mobile developers facing the same challenges as me, our campus could launch an effective mobile presence quickly,” said Brian Payst, director of information technology in student affairs at UNC-Chapel Hill. “The code comes with several out-of-box features that are immediately applicable to educational institutions, and I look forward to sharing future product developments based on Kurogo with the iMobileU contributor group.”
A key factor in Kurogo’s growth comes from iMobileU , a community of higher education institutions committed to advancing the progress and innovation of mobile development. Through weekly calls and numerous contributions, Kurogo has evolved through open source code collaborations from iMobileU members across the globe. Universities are welcome to join the iMobileU community by visiting www.imobileu.org .
“The key with Kurogo is it comes with several best-practice functions already developed and ready to be deployed, based on contributions from other education institutions,” said Scott Olivieri, manager of web technology at Boston College. “The streamlined nature of the solution allows me to deliver pretty powerful functionality to students and faculty while also incorporating the needs of the institution’s marketing department. I can satisfy the needs of multiple groups in delivering information to the campus community.”
“As an open source framework, Kurogo provides numerous advantages over other commercially based mobile development systems,” said Patrick Burt, web communications director at the University of Central Florida. “Using Kurogo, we’ve been able to heavily customize our mobile website and the codebase itself. We’ve built dynamic modules that pull data from a wide array of sources and display seamlessly on mobile devices, from iPhones to Droids. Kurogo provides us at UCF with an incredibly efficient and flexible mobile development platform.
